Drake’s Fury – Salamanders Razorback
Drake's Fury is the dedicated Razorback for the 2nd tactical squad of the Salamander's 4th Company. Bearing the rare single Lascannon and twin-linked Plasmagun pattern, Drake's Fury entered service over a millennia ago. In that time, it has seen numerous engagements and earned a host of battle honors.
In 907.M41, during the final push in the battle for Gangreatha III, Drake's Fury bore then-Captain He'Stan, along with his successor, then-Sergeant Doc'Tyr, leading a tank column into the heart of the battle against the heavily-armored Mantis Warrior contingent. Drake's Fury's guns were responsible for immobilizing the rebel Land Raider serving as a mobile command. He'Stan and his retinue charged forth into the enemy line while Drake's Fury showered the rebels with plasma fire. Within minutes, the Mantis Warriors were in disarray and falling back. Drake's Fury led a small detachment of Razorbacks to harry the retreat, breaking what remained of the rebel's will to fight. Within a week, Gangreatha III was back in the Emperor's Grace.
Painting note: The chipped paint effect came from this tutorial by BuyPainted. I haven't mastered it yet, but I'm very happy with the way this turned out. Adding the decals first is definitely a good idea.
Fire Drakes First Assault Squad Pri’Mak
Honored Veteran Sergeant Pri'Mak commands his four veteran brothers, all clad in terminator armor and bearing the master-crafted relic thunder hammers that the chapter is renowned for. Pri'Mak and his veteran brothers have nearly two centuries of exemplary service each, and have served in countless engagements. They famously smashed their way through the Tyranid-infested wasteland of Magris Secundus, bringing low horrible xenos both large and small in a three-day march across that doomed world. For this action, Pri'Mak was awarded the Iron Halo, which he bears proudly.
Salamanders Land Speeder Squadron On’Dreth
Salamanders aren't known for their use of Land Speeders due to the gravitational anomalies on Nocturne, however, the chapter does have a few. The 4th Company currently has two, which are commanded by Brother On'Dreth. On'Dreth pilots Speeder #10, which carries a multi-melta (operated by Brother Hus'fal) and a Tornado-pattern heavy flamer. Brother Tso'Fir pilots Speeder #9, which also bears a multi-melta (operated by Brother De'Kruz) and a Tornado-pattern Assault cannon.
Both of the speeders have a history dating back to the Badab conflict, where they began their service with the chapter as spoils taken from an Astral Claws stockpile. Salamanders techmarines were initially reluctant to use them, as the Chapter had relatively few to begin with, and considering the traitorous nature of their original ownership. However, the installed weaponry was too tempting a prize to forgo, and the vehicles were carefully stripped and reconstructed.
Since their introduction into the 4th Company's armory, each speeder's crew has been largely responsible for its care and maintenance, and Brother On'Dreth is quite fastidious in the upkeep of his charges. The only flaw that is allowed to remain for long is the melta-shot marring the front of Speeder #9, earned in battle and displayed as both a badge and a warning about the awesome power their weapons can unleash.
Modeling note - Weapon mounts on both speeders are magnetized. Both the Tornado weapons are metal - apparently I bought the old Land Speeder models. I'd love to get my hands on another Heavy Flamer so that I can run both as MM/FF. I use them a lot when I run drop pods with locator beacons.
Blood Angels Tank Column
(Note, the rear two tanks are still works in progress.)
Baal Predator Fidelus and Razorbacks Eas In Crucem and Saevio Angelus cross the Ingeltos River into Port Barston at the beginning of the Haerid Prime campaign. Fidelus was responsible for breaking the forward command headquarters of the rebel faction, which allowed the Eas In Crucem to deliver the Death Company close to the rear. Assault Squad Quartus Æolus followed them in Saevio Angelus and ensured that their sacrifice was capitalized upon. The three members of the Death Company produced a 48-1 kill ratio, while Sergeant Æolus and his squad provided cover fire. By the time the Death Company had been brought down, the entire Western command structure had been left in disarray.
Assault Squad Quartus Leander arrived via Stormraven with Brother-Priest Lombrec and joined with the rest of Assault Squad Quartus. Together, the squad and three tanks harried the Western flank before eventually joining up with the main strike force.
Salamanders Predator and Vindicator
The Vindicator Anvil of Prometheus and Predator Nocturne are frequently deployed in support of the the 4th Company, and have been used by Vulkan He'Stan's expeditionary forces on a number of engagements.
Anvil of Prometheus has been lovingly maintained by its crew for generations, and the magma-and-salamander emblem on its siege shield is meticulously repainted after every battle.

Nocturne is the preferred chariot of Honored Forge-Brother Kro'Nes, the 4th Company's chief techmarine. Not content to sit on the sidelines, Kro'Nes is famous for leading his tank column directly into the heart of battle. Nocturne is a sort of legend among the Salamanders, having been crippled on the battlefield a score of times, and each time revived by Kro'Nes and his techmarines. Kro'Nes is also notorious for leaping from his stricken vehicle to engage enemy forces hand-to-hand rather than allow them to further ruin his beloved Predator. Despite the amount of firepower it has absorbed, Nocturne is rebuilt and repainted, returning like a phoenix again and again.
Blood Angels 8th Company Honor Guard
Veteran Sergeant Enteron commands the Bloodblade's honour guard, and is tasked with the protection of Captain Zedrenael or whatever commander is currently leading the 8th Company's major strike force engagement. Enteron was Zedrenael's squad corporal through 73 engagements and 5 different postings, up through and including their time together as members of the 1st company. When Zedrenael was promoted to Captain of the 8th Company, he immediately selected Enteron as his Honour sergeant.
Enteron is joined by Blood Champion Dracian, Sanguinary Novitiate Peras, Standard Bearer Jothan and Honour Guardian Andrellus. Peras was assigned by the Apothecarium to the 8th Company, and is nearing promotion to the priesthood. Jothan and Andrellus formerly served as assault sergeants in the 8th Company and 3rd Company, and were selected by Enteron personally to serve in the Honour Guard. Dracian has served under five different captains as Blood Champion and is sought after by many commanders. His latest posting was by request, as he wishes to help the chapter's younger members become the warriors that Baal needs them to be.
Salamanders 4th Company, 2nd Tactical Squad Su’Ryn
Honored Veteran Sergeant Su'Ryn has commanded the 4th Company's 2nd Tactical Squad since the time thatVulkan He'Stan was the company's captain. The 2nd squad distinguished itself on Armageddon during the Third War, earning a number of honors and commendations, the most prominent being the Imperial Aquila for its heroism in defense of Imperial citizens.
Su'Ryn, like most of the company's veteran sergeants, is equipped with a combi-melta and a powerfist. He is joined by two other veterans, Kelan and Paz'Uth, who wield a flamer and a multi-melta, respectively. Honored Brother Kel'an, bears the Imperial Aquila award for the squad. Both Kelan and Paz'Uth serve as squad corporals, with Paz'Uth frequently leading a static support fire team when the squad splits.
Su'Ryn and Kelan typically ride with the forward squad in the Razorback Drake's Fury, commanded by Tech-Brother Ka'Ros. Drake's Fury bears the rare lascannon-and-plasmagun pattern and has been in the service of the 4th company for over 1,200 years.
Brother Caeden, Death Company Dreadnought
I've had a shiny new camera since Christmas, but I haven't really taken a lot of pictures... until last night. Shamelessly ripping off Aventine at Zen 40,000, I'm going to start posting a few shots of a model or unit every so often with some fluff. This should keep me updating regularly for a bit.
Without further ado:
Caeden forged a stellar career in the 8th company, atypical of most Blood Angels. He served in the honor guard as company champion under two consecutive captains, and was offered promotion to the 4th, 2nd and eventually 1st companies, all of which he refused in order to remain as an adviser to his captain and company.
During the Tohlren campaign in 915.M41, Caeden was gravely wounded while facing an Ork warboss in single combat. Though he defeated the mighty greenskin, he himself was left crippled and dying. His years of valiant service made the decision to enshrine him in Furioso armour quite easy.
As a revered Furioso, Caeden took part in a number of campaigns, smashing though the enemies of mankind with renewed vigor. However, during the invasion of Haerid Prime, Caeden fell to the Black Rage. His armor was painted black and decorated to announce him as the deliverer of death that he had become.
During the Haerid Prime campaign, Caeden was mostly responsible for annihilating most of the forces of the rebellious 227th Haerid Conservatory in the city of Prestlake. Rebellious forces scattered before him and left the city to Captain Zedrenael's task force. Caeden stalked the city for three days before the company's techmarines managed to fix a grapple on him and evacuate him from the battlefield.
Ultramarines Movie Review
After the shipping hiccup, I finally received my copy of Ultramarines! Therefore, I am compelled to write a review.
First and foremost, let me say that I am an insufferable picker of nits when it comes to things that have continuity that I care about. What you are about to read may be construed as a scathing deconstruction, but that’s just because I care. The most important thing to understand about my review I’ll put right up front: When all is said and done, I was entertained. I liked it. I am very happy that they made it and I hope they make more.
Now, onto what I didn’t like. Be forewarned, MASSIVE SPOILER ALERTS BELOW.
Craftworld Yn’dè’asgal
It's fluff time! Here's the background for my Eldar craftworld. I promise pics (courtesy of my non-40k'ing friend Evan) at the end!
The craftworld that became known as Yn’dè’asgal was a peaceful exploration craft that returned from an outpost in a far-flung corner of the galaxy shortly before The Fall. Still orbiting close to the massive webway gate that it had returned through, it managed to slip back through as the warp storm now known as the Eye of Terror formed. Because of this quick action, it was the closest Eldar craftworld to the Homeworlds to actually survive the Fall.
Returning to the distant system they had been exploring, the severely damaged craftworld had sustained massive casualties and was on the brink of destruction. The remnants would spend the next two centuries repairing and rebuilding. The webway gate would lay dormant for this time, as the survivors feared that they were perhaps the only survivors, and perhaps the webway was infested with whatever doom had befallen their kin.
However, 236 years after The Fall, the webway gate opened and a small band of Harlequins made their way to the craftworld, bringing news of the extent of the fall and the tenuous survival of the Eldar race. Among the tales they told was the lore concerning Ynnead, the as-yet-to-be-born God of the Dead. This legend, in particular, soon took root within the minds of the distant survivors. A cult grew steadily over the coming years that would eventually claim the vast majority of all the craftworld inhabitants, tough it would not be for another five centuries that this cult would understand it true purpose.
739 years after The Fall, the Phoenix Lords Asurmen and Jain Zar arrived on the craftworld and created the first Aspect Shrines. Maugan Ra, Karandras and Fuegan would follow over the next century. Preaching the path of the warrior, the Phoenix Lords found the inhabitants ready pupils. Within three centuries of the arrival of Asurmen and Jain Zar, the craftworld itself was an entirely military establishment. Any who refused the Path of the Warrior remained on the outpost. All who embraced it also embraced the Cult of Ynnead. The two ideologies mixed, and the result was an entirely new breed of Eldar thought.
The Seer Council, leaders of the Cult, declared that since Ynnead was an unborn butterfly, still sleeping in his chrysalis, and that only the end of the Eldar race would wake him, that their holy duty was to aid his awakening. Far from being suicidal, however, they understood their place to be constantly waging war against any who stood before them. As they fell, they would bring Ynnead closer to waking, while making his victory over all of the enemies of the Gods that much easier with every foe they took with them.
The craftworld was renamed Yn’dè’asgal (In-day-ashkal) - a contraction of “Ynnead Dealain-dè Fuasgail” (In-ee-ad Dal-ayn-day Fwash-kayl), a phrase roughly translated to “Liberating the Butterfly Ynnead.” The leaders of the Aspect shrines all turned their attention to this ideology, making it their primary thought. The colors of each aspect were replaced with the new colors of the craftworld – Black highlighted with bone and the cerulean of the butterflies native to the outpost. Only a token of the former Aspect colors were retained in reverence to the Phoenix Lords.
Entering the Webway, the craftworld struck out on their new purpose, destined to purge the galaxy of as many foes as they could before they fell in the name of awakening the God of the Dead.
Alliances
Craftworld Yn’dè’asgal maintains relations with a few other craftworld, but have a fell reputation amongst others. They feel a kinship with the warlike nature of Biel-Tan but disagree with their ends, thinking that reforming the Empire is a lost cause. Among the Ulthwe seer council, there are those who understand the Yn’dè’asgal crusade, and their dedication to short-term losses for long-term goals. However, Yn’dè’asgal is reviled by Craftworld Iyanden. Yn’dè’asgal was close enough to aid the relatively stationary Iyanden in their darkest hour against the swarm of Hive Fleet Kraken, but refused, feeling it better to allow Iyanden to fall in battle to speed Ynnead's awakening than to score a decisive victory. Yn’dè’asgal's seer council foretold the slim victory and the potential extinction of Iyanden, and consider it a worthy trade. The two craftworlds have moved far apart from each other, and meetings between them are often hostile.
Yn’dè’asgal maintains a good relationship with the Harlequins, and they are often joined in battle by a troupe.
Picture time!
Here's my counts-as-Yriel autarch:
And here he is with two squads of Dire Avengers and a "Wave Serpent." When I purchased this army, it came with four Falcon chassis. Having no desire to run four more Falcons, I just converted the turrets. One of these days I might get the Forge World turrets, but it's not likely. The turrets haven't been painted yet, which is why it's missing in this picture.
Here's a better shot of the front of the Serpent. The butterfly wings are the craftworld symbol. I gave up on the glass cockpit because it was already glued in place, which made painting the pilot impossible. I like the painted glass effect better anyway. This picture doesn't really convey it, but it's got a nice glosscote shine on it (as do the gemstones).
This is my version of Eldrad. All that fluff above and I haven't named him yet (which is astonishing, considering I've actually named every single one of my Crimson Fists - their names are all painted on their bases).
And here he is with his seer council. I'm pretty pleased with the way they turned out. I need to get individual shots of these guys.
So that my Harlequins can ride in style, they've got their own pimped-out Falcon. This one took a while, and is actually (like almost everything else in this army) a work in progress.
And finally, here's my old Yme-Loc Wave Serpent. I was originally painting this army with Yme-Loc colors, but once I got to the Aspects (I don't like guardians), it started to look like complete crap. I wanted a unified color scheme, so I created my own fluffy reason why all my Aspects wear black and blue. I just can't bring myself to repaint this one, though, which is OK because I've still got 2000 points without it.
These things certainly are a pain in the neck to assemble.
Coming as soon as I edit the video is another battle report, which features this army getting TABLED by Orks! At the rate I'm going with Eldar, Ynnead should be strutting about next week.
