Fandex: Eldar | Pathfinders

The Stats:

Pathfinders 100 points (Troops)

WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
Pathfinder 3 5 3 3 1 4 1 8 5+

Unit Composition: 3 Pathfinders
Unit Type: Infantry
Wargear: Ranger Long Rifle (Range:36", S:X, AP6, Heavy 2, Sniper), Shuriken Pistol
Special Rules: Fleet, Infiltrate, Move Through Cover, Stealth, Scouts, Singular Focus

Singular Focus: By sacrificing rate of fire for focused concentration, Pathfinders are able to maximize the effectiveness of their shots.  Any model in the squad may elect to change their Ranger Long Rifle from Heavy 2 to Heavy 1 until the end of the turn.  In exchange, wounds from that model are allocated by the model's controlling player, not the controller of the targeted unit.

Options:
Add up to 7 additional Pathfinders - 25 points per model
Equip the entire squad with Camoleoline Cloaks - 5 points per model

Camoleoline Cloaks: These cloaks are made of a highly resilient, lightweight material that changes color and pattern to match its surroundings.  They are long enough to cover the entire body, effectively blending the wearer in with his surroundings.  Models with Camoleoline Cloaks have their cover save improved by 2, to a maximum of +2.

Allow me to explain myself:

Instead of Pathfinders and Rangers, I combined them and split the upgrade rationale into wargear.  They're better at hiding because they have awesome cloaks!  The stat line gets one simple change:  BS5.  Sure, the squad only becomes 5 points more expensive, but that was more to counter-balance the loss of 5+ AP1 on the Pathfinders.  The extra shot on the rifle makes these a good value.  Compare them to Space Marine snipers - 25 points more for the squad, twice as many shots and hitting on 2+ instead of 4+.

Camoleoline Cloaks - They still get 2+ cover!

Targeting Spotters - Basically, I wanted to turn them all into mini-Telions.  These things make you sacrifice half of your shooing in order to pick off that Sergeant.

Edit: sonsoftaurus was right about the Targeting Spotters - see the comments below.

Fandex: Eldar | The Avatar of Khaine

I used to have an Eldar army, but I sold it to help finance my Blood Angels.  Then I decided my blog should venerate the immortal Emperor, so there's not a lot of Xeno heresy hanging out here.  That being said, I have a soft spot for Spess Elfz.  Along with Black Templars, they were the first models I laid my grubby paint brush on.  Even farther back than that, at the beginning of my geekery, I played almost exclusively elves in D&D.  I mean, lots and lots of elves.  Those pointy-eared jerks hold something special in my geeky heart.

When I parted with my Eldar, it was a gaming decision.  Let's face it, Eldar aren't the best army out there.  I wanted a better army, a better-looking army, and one that I could paint from the ground up.  So, the Eldar went buh-bye.   What could have saved them from the cruelty of eBay?  Well, a better codex, that's what.  To that end, I've been working on a fandex.  I'll post units here and there for the next 20 years or a new Eldar codex comes out, whichever comes first.

Here's the first offering:  The Avatar of Khaine.

The Stats:

The Avatar of Khaine 255 points

WS BS S T W I A Ld Sv
Avatar 10 5 6 6 5 6 5 10 3+

Unit Composition: 1 (Unique)
Unit Type: Monstrous Creature
Wargear: The Wailing Doom
Special Rules: Eternal Warrior, Fearless, Furious Charge, The Bloody Hand, Inevitable Advance, Inspiring, Molten Body

The Bloody Hand: The Avatar’s hands drip with the blood of its enemies, driving terror into their hearts. The Avatar counts as scoring one extra wound in close combat for the purposes of determining the outcome of close combat.

Inevitable Advance: The Avatar paces across the battlefield, deliberate and relentlessly carving a path of destruction through the Craftworld’s enemies.  The Avatar has the Slow and Purposeful and Fleet special rules, and always rolls 2d6 when running, taking the highest value.

Inspiring: The Avatar is a towering icon of the might of the Eldar, a physical manifestation of their dominance on the battlefield, and all Eldar that look upon it are filled with the fury of Khaine.  Any friendly Eldar units that can draw line of sight to the Avatar become Fearless.  Additionally, any friendly Eldar units within 6” of the Avatar gain the Furious Charge USR.

The Avatar’s presence even inspires even the dead.  Friendly units with 12” of the Avatar may re-reroll the dice to determine if they are affected by Wraithsight.

Molten Body: The Avatar’s body is fashioned from burning iron flooded with glowing magma. Melta weapons and weapons with a Template range have their strength reduced by half and count as AP- for purposes of wounding the Avatar. The fluid nature of the magma also provides the Avatar with a 4+ Invulnerable save.

Additionally, for every wound that the Avatar suffers in close combat, all models in base contact with the Avatar immediately receive a S4, AP- hit as burning magma splashes onto them. Unsaved wounds from these hits count toward the wounds dealt by the Avatar for purposes of combat resolution.

The Wailing Doom: The Wailing Doom is a weapon of immense power that may take the form of a vicious spear, a mighty sword, or a many-bladed axe.  It can be used to project a nimbus of burning psychic energy, using the following profile:

Range: 12” S:8 AP:1 Assault 1, Melta

Allow me to explain myself:

At a hundred points less, the 4th edition Avatar was pricey for what it did. As a single unit for those points, it's not bad, but it doesn't really deliver as an HQ under the current codex paradigm where your HQ should bring something to the table for the rest of your army.  To that end, I wanted something that really exemplified what the Avatar represents to the Eldar.

The Bloody Hand - Come on, this thing is huge, angry, on fire, and coming to kill you.  When it gets to you, you mess yourself in a feeble attempt to fight back and it will probably win.

Inevitable Advance - Slow and Purposeful slows it down, but Fleet with 2d6 speeds it back up.  I didn't want to make it too fast, but I really wanted this thing to pound its way across the field with large strides, a trail of burning footprints in its wake.

Inspiring - the 12" bubble was good, but this thing is the living embodiment of the Almighty God of Murder Everything Right In Its Face to the Eldar, so it stands to reason that if they can see the Avatar, they'll be inspired to murder whatever happens to be in front of them, right in its hapless face.  the bubble reduces to 6" and confers Furious Charge instead, which seemed more appropriate.  The Spiritseer bubble is part of my Wraithsight update.

Molten Body - instead of making it impervious to flamers and melta, I figured that it'd be to leave those weapons with a small chance to wound.  Heck, if ceramite can withstand the heat of re-entry but still get a hole blown through it by melta (albeit not quite as easily), then there's still a chance that it might blow a hole in the Avatar.  Of course, half-strength means that flamers can't touch it.
The additional attacks just made sense.  I mean, this thing is MAGMA, so when you cut it open, shouldn't that hurt you as well?

Daemon - I ditched this in order to give the Eldar at least some chance against the Grey Knights.  The Eldar are supposed to be the most potent psykers in the game, and that means I'm giving them a ton of psykers.  That also means that Grey Knights will pour milk over them and make them part of a well-balanced breakfast, so they don't need their big-ass HQ coughing up even more buffs.

Winning (and soaking in Astral Tiger blood?)

Captain Delgado - Howling Griffins

My Captain Delgado conversion took 2nd place in the Badab Veterans contest!  First place went to Jim's Fire Hawks Librarian, and well deserved!  I scored a big old bag 'o bitz, and I can't wait to see what kind of goodies are in there.  Thanks to everyone who voted!

Looking over this model again, I noticed something rather stupid:  He's backward.  I was going off a picture that I believe comes from IA10, but it turns out the quartering I was following was reversed.  So I've got this beautiful Howling Griffon model that looks like a Bizarro version.  I was considering selling it, but I guess I'll just add it to my trophy case.

Painting for Charity – Want to help?

About a year ago, a bunch of guys got together and painted up an entire Storm Wardens army, then raffled it off for charity.  When all was said and done, they raised over $16,000 for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières.  That's an impressive chunk of change.

I'm always thinking of new armies I'd love to build, but I have neither the time nor resources to put them all together, paint them, and then play them.  I do, however, have time to paint two or three units, but what would be the point, other than having them sit on my shelf? I'm sure there are a bunch of you out there who feel the same way.  So, instead of painting that whole army, why not just paint a few units?  And when you're done with them, why not give them over to a good cause?

Here's what I'm proposing:  a new 2000-2500 point Grey Knights army, where everyone involved paints up 1-3 units.   Everyone involved would do WIP blog posts to let people know what we're doing.  Like the Storm Wardens project, we collect money for charity and raffle the finished product off. At the end, I'd handle gathering all of the components and shipping them off to the winner. It's a win-win for everyone involved. You get to showcase your work, you get more traffic to your blog, and in the end, you get to raise money to help people.

Now, I don't have any illusions about generating $16,000, but if we can make this a serious project, we can do a lot of good.  Charity-wise, I'd stick with DWB/MSF.  They're doing a lot of work around the globe right now, and they could use the funds.

The more people we have committed to the project, the easier it will be to get sponsors on board to donate additional materials, as well.

Let me know!  Comment here or drop me an email at forholyterra@hobbycore.net. I'd like to get started as soon as possible!

Captain Delgado, Howling Griffins Chapter Champion

This is my entry for the Badab Bloggers Group Badab Veterans competition.  The Fly Lords of Terra are updating their Badab War material in the wake of Imperial Armour 9 and 10, and part of the competition is the possibility of having models featured in the new material.  As there were no Salamanders characters, I decided to go with something a bit more challenging for me and settled on the Howling Griffins champion.  Red is a hard enough color to work with, but yellow is downright malicious.  Quartered red and yellow were going to be a trip.  This model wasn't as difficult to paint as I'd imagined, but let's just say that I won't be doing a Howling Griffins army any time soon.

Here's a few WIP shots to whet your appetite:

Captain Delgado WIP

I started with a Sanguinary Guard torso and filed off the muscle detail on the sides, then filled in the abs on the front with green stuff.  I wanted a really stylized look, because this is the Chapter Champion we're talking about.  I went for the torso with the scrollwork on the front to further reduce the muscled look.

For the Relic Blade, I went back to my Blood Angels bitz box and grabbed a Glaive Encarmine.  I carefully cut the hand away, and then removed the chainsword from the arm from the Devestator sprue.  A little green stuff for the gap (which I later trimmed up), and it looks perfect.  The only problem I had later was getting the whole model into frame!  He's pretty stretched out in his pose.

Captain Delgado is also armed with a Storm Shield, and I wanted something knightly to go with the overall scheme.  The quartered pattern and the griffin rampant really give a ren faire vibe to the Chapter, so I wanted to use something other than the standard storm shield.  I cut a shield out of plasticard, then flattened a blob of green stuff.  Once it was dry, I drew the Chapter symbol on, and started cutting.

This picture was taken about thirty seconds before disaster struck.  The green stuff wasn't holding well, but I couldn't lift it off without it falling apart.  So, I hit the whole thing with super glue.  Unfortunately, the super glue pooled in the recesses, and it turned into a giant mess. Once I'd primed it, I could barely make out details anymore.  Two days worth of my best greenstuff work went down the tubes.

I still used the shield concept, which you'll see later on, but ditched the raised symbol.  It looks better freehanded.

When I did my Salamanders, I did all of the heads separately in order to hit the small details up close.  Unfortunately, I'd forgotten that trick by the time I got to my Blood Angels, and now I'm having a heck of a time getting them looking nice.  I went back to the good practices for this model.  Using yet another Blood Angels part, I filed the blood drops off of the left side.  I painted a bit of battle damage on , which you can see just below the eye lens and at the top of the crown.  There's also a bit of NMM work on the skull.  I don't do NMM well, but I didn't put even a drop of metallics on this model.

And here's the finished product.  Yes, that's yet another Blood Angels bit for his right pauldron, which suits the Howling Griffins well.  They tend to decorate their armor with vows, so a whole parchment seemed quite suitable.  His left pauldron includes a terminator shield to further denote his veteran status, and displays the same heraldry in the upper right quarter as on his left kneepad.

Here's a good shot of the shield.  I wound up using a kite style, and heated the plasticard slightly in order to get the nice curve on it.  The symbol is freehanded with a micron pen, which turned out well.

Another good shot of the shield from my lightbox, which I really need to get better lights for.

And once last shot of the details from the other side.  Again, the symbol is freehanded onto the right pauldron.  You can see more NMM douches on the vents, skulls, and Iron Halo.  There's also a hint of the quartered heraldry on the terminator shield.

I WANT YOU

Image via MajorTom11 on DakkaDakka.com, used without permission, but hot damn, this is a sweet paint job.

To move your blog to The Hobby Core.  Yes, that's right, I'm asking you to uproot yourself from whatever blogging platform you're currently using and move to a strange new land.

Why would I ask such a thing of you?  Well, I have a few very good reasons.

  1. I'm an egotistical prat who needs validation no, that's probably true, but please don't hold it against me.
  2. Other blogging sites are great and all, but this one is specifically for blogging about your hobby.
  3. That means you get to help build a community.
  4. It'll be like an awesome party where the drinks are plentiful and the music doesn't suck (please bring your own drinks and music).

What are the benefits?

  1. The system will allow you to import all of your old posts from nearly any blogging system, so you can make a wholesale move.
  2. Your posts will be syndicated on the site's global posts, meaning more exposure
  3. You get a free hobbycore.com POP3 email address.
  4. You get 500MB of image space.
  5. If you want, you can point your own domain name to your blog.
  6. At your request, you can access tools to connect to Twitter and Facebook to spread your posts about the internet.
  7. You get to help build a community from the ground up.
  8. The bigger the community gets, the more traffic it will draw, which means more traffic to your site.
  9. You get to control your own advertising (various features of which I am still working on).  Bottom line, ads won't get tossed on your site without your say-so.

What other benefits do you want?  Seriously, I'm asking, because I'm open to suggestions.

For the greater WAAAGH!

Holy crap, a battle report! It's apparently been a long time since I've done one of these, so please excuse the crappy production skills. I blame my Director of Photography and Executive Producer, David Klein and Peter Jackson (in my head). The next one, which I'll be filming tonight and hopefully putting up before April, should be much better.

I've also noticed that I say "all right" at the beginning of nearly every segment. It's about as annoying as nails on chalkboard, and I'm going to attempt to never do it again.

(featured image shamelessly viked from Granamir. Apologies!)

Blastimus Maximus pattern Predicator

Cheese

Some of you may have noticed that I've joined two new blog networks - International House of Paincakes and Badab Bloggers (in addition to ::coughshamelessplug:: The Hobby Core network).  Paincakes has some good member promotion going on, and my Salamanders Vindicator post was featured in the #2 slot on their Weekly Top X.  In the feature was a request for an Apocalypse datasheet for the dreamy "Ultimate" version.  Well, I'm not one to back down from such a blatant challenge, so here it is:

The Blastimus Maximus pattern Predicator
Type: Tank (Ridiculous)
250 Points

BS F S R
4 13 11 10

Wargear:
Demolisher Cannon
Two sponson-mounted Lascannons
Pintle-mounted Multi-melta
Siege Shield
Extra Armour
Smoke Launchers
Searchlight

Special Rules:
Death Blossom - The Blastimus Maximus may choose to fire all available weapons in a single turn (Demolisher cannon and all others), and each at a different target.  However, if it choses to do this, all shooting is resolved at BS 2, and it suffers a "Crew Shaken" hit, making it ineligible to fire on the next round.   If all shots miss and/or scatter completely off of their intended target, the Blastimus Maximus has suffered a catastrophic failure and it suffers a single penatrating hit.  If the result of this hit is "Crew Shaken" or "Crew Stunned," the result is treated as "Crew Stunned" regardless of the vehicle's Extra Armour, as the crew sits around for a turn trying to figure out exactly what went wrong.

Options:
May take any of the following:
- a Storm Bolter - 10 points
- a Hunter-Killer Missile - 10 points

I expect to see battle reports and conversions!

Ultramarines Movie Review

After the shipping hiccup, I finally received my copy of Ultramarines!  Therefore, I am compelled to write a review.

First and foremost, let me say that I am an insufferable picker of nits when it comes to things that have continuity that I care about.  What you are about to read may be construed as a scathing deconstruction, but that’s just because I care.  The most important thing to understand about my review I’ll put right up front:  When all is said and done, I was entertained.  I liked it.  I am very happy that they made it and I hope they make more.

Now, onto what I didn’t like.  Be forewarned, MASSIVE SPOILER ALERTS BELOW.
