More ‘Ard Boyz list mulling

I know I’ve been talking lists and not posting enough pictures, but that is guaranteed to change soon. In the mean time…

I’m going to ‘Ard Boyz Round 2! I took 3rd place, and came away with some important list ideas. So, here are the two that I’m considering:

HQ
190 – Forgefather Vulkan He’Stan
200 – Chapter Master Tu’Shan (Counts as Lysander – and I’m already working on an awesome conversion)

Troops
265 – Tactical Squad 2 (x10) – Sergeant w/ Power Fist & Combi-Melta,  Meltagun, Missile Launcher in Rhino w/ Extra Armour & Dozer Blade
245 – Tactical Squad 3 (x10) – Sergeant w/ Power Fist & Combi-Melta,  Meltagun, Multi-melta in Drop Pod
210 – Tactical Squad 6 (x10) – Sergeant w/ Power Fist & Combi-Melta,  Meltagun, Multi-melta

Elites
200 – Assault Terminator Squad A (x5) – Thunder Hammers & Storm Shields
200 – Assault Terminator Squad B (x5) - Thunder Hammers & Storm Shields
185 – Sternguard Squad (x5) – Sergeant with Combi-melta, 2x Combi-meltas, 2x Meltaguns in Drop Pod

Heavy Support
275 – Land Raider Crusader – Extra Armour, Multi-Melta
275 – Land Raider Crusader – Extra Armour, Multi-Melta
265 – Land Raider Redeemer - Extra Armour, Multi-Melta

(If you can’t tell, I’m not going into this with the intention of going easy on my opponents. I’m a nice guy, and I’m going to play a nice game, but I intend to place in the top three again.)

Tu’Shan and Tac 6 rides in the Redeemer while Vulkan rides along with one of the Termies. Sternguard drop onto the juiciest target and unload melta-death into it (I am taking this trick straight from the loss I was handed in my third game). Tac 2 stays back to hold objectives or lay down fire as needed, and Tac 3 drops in to create confusion. Three Land Raiders should give my opponent some twitches, and then having 11 master-crafted Thunder Hammers and 2+/3+ monstrosities running around should hopefully seal the deal.

But I’ve got an even crazier list…

HQ
190 – Forgefather Vulkan He’Stan
200 – Chapter Master Tu’Shan (Counts as Lysander)

Troops
210 – Tactical Squad 2 (x10) – Sergeant w/ Power Fist & Combi-Melta,  Meltagun, Missile Launcher
210 – Tactical Squad 3 (x10) – Sergeant w/ Power Fist & Combi-Melta,  Meltagun, Multi-melta
210 – Tactical Squad 6 (x10) – Sergeant w/ Power Fist & Combi-Melta,  Meltagun, Multi-melta

Elites
475 – Assault Terminator Squad A (x5) – Thunder Hammers & Storm Shields in Land Raider Crusader w/ Extra Armour, Multi-Melta
200 – Assault Terminator Squad B (x5) - Thunder Hammers & Storm Shields

Heavy Support
275 – Land Raider Crusader – Extra Armour, Multi-Melta
265 – Land Raider Redeemer - Extra Armour, Multi-Melta
265 – Land Raider Redeemer - Extra Armour, Multi-Melta

What’s better than three Land Raiders? FOUR LAND RAIDERS. The lone mech-less tac squad hides in whatever ruin I’ve bolstered, while the Raiders run in pairs delivering death and destruction.

The best part about both of these lists is that they’re fluffy! Tanks and melta and thunder hammers oh my! So, which list do you think is better?

But a land raider is still a heavy support…. OMG THAT IS ACTUALLY AMAZING (list 2).!!!! Only problem is with that one is that you don’t really have a disruption/quick reaction unit… but it’s still pretty cool and would be interesting to face someone with that list – will have to try it!…

Although I’m still kind of leaning towards list 1 – I mean isn’t THREE!!!!! land raiders enough????? And then you get transports to save your troops a drop podding troop choice and extra firepower with sternguard in a drop pod!

One question though, do you have a preference to crusaders? I find them kind of meh (my friend has one and I have a half built one ) and really like my redeemer… you could think about taking 2 redeemers and a crusader instead of the opposite way round and you can still give the termies their dedicated transport.

Anyway both are good lists! Much more interesting than what I usually see with salamanders!

Yeah, list 2 doesn’t have a rapid response. but I’ve found that I can dart across the board if need be.  Of course, people are going to try to stay the heck away from that, but twin-linked melta and assault cannon shots will encourage them to stay put.  My bane would be meeting a fast army in an objectives mission.  Otherwise, I just advance to the center and hole up there, laying down fire and assaulting as need be.

I like the Crusaders for two reason:  1, because I can pack 8 Terminators into them, and 2, because I can move 6″ and fire all four weapons.  A 6″ move in a Godhammer or a Redeemer only gets me two weapons.  A slowly-advancing Crusader has 11 shots at 24″ and 17 at 12″ – and with Vulkan, all of them are twin-linked.  I try to always keep my Land Raiders moving.

I was actually contemplating this last night:

Forgefather Vulkan He’stan 2 x 5 TH/SS Terminators 2 x 10 Space Marines, MM, Flamer, Rhino 3 x Land Speeder, MM, HF 1 x Land Raider Crusader, Extra Armour, Pintle MM 1 x Land Raider Redeemer, Extra Armour, Pintle MM

    for 1750 points.

It’s true, some armies will have major difficulties killing 4 Land Raiders. However a few won’t (for example my IG which has meltas + S10 galore). A bad matchup will really cost you but this is the case with any unbalanced list.

Like Dimmy said, you are also lacking the cheeky fast units. That’s why I included 3 speeders on my list above. Not sure what the winning conditions for Hard Boyz are but I am pretty sure you will need something that can deny your opponent his objective on the last turn (a fast vehicle ideally).

Do you think Lysander is an important component of your army? Would you exchange him for 3 Land Speeders maybe? Just saying. You are also lacking long range anti tank and that can really hurt if you are playing against speedy opponets (and if over where you are is anything like Greece, you will keep seeing more and more DE players on the tabletops).

Okay that’s my tuppence, hope it makes sense and good luck on the tournament!

I have two Land Speeders painted and a third built and ready to prime, so that’s a definite possibility for 210 points.  Granted, I based these lists off of what I saw from Round 1, so the missions and victory conditions are going to be a major factor in how I tune this list.

Had I brought either of these lists to Round 1, I would probably have finished first or second, because one of them was straight-up kill points (of which these lists have very few), one was objectives (which I won largely due to the Land Raiders), and the third was victory points with extra points for the general, which I lost because I was hunting Calgar.  Having Lysander as a general there dropping in with some Sternguard would have made things a lot different.

So, it’s really a matter of missions.  I think the 3-raider list is probably a lot less unbalanced than the 4-raider list and gives me more flexibility.

For your first list, I have to say I was never a big fan of Drop Pod Sternguard. I just think the unit is to precious and expensive for suicide melta duties. I actually prefer your second list to be honest. You could change Lysander for 3 speeders and it would be cool. The speeders could stay hidden behind the Land Raiders and pop out when they are needed (they will also fulfil the job of long range anti tank you are curretnly lacking).

And I would probably take out the Power Fists from your Sergeant. You don’t want this guys assaulting anything scarier than a Fire Warrior and if a dedicated close combat unit charge you I don’t think 2 power fist attacks will do much of a difference. Plus is a helluva points to pay (75 for all 3 of them). Personally, I would drop them and get a Rhino or a Razorback for the Land Raider-less Tactical Unit.
